The Norwalk Senior Center NEEDS YOUR HELP!
Despite all of our fundraising appeals and events, we have experienced a decline in revenues due to the ongoing recession.
This is a special request to ask you to make a donation now to bridge the gap.

As you know, the Norwalk Senior Center offers critical services and programs to individuals in our community, some of whom
are the most vulnerable. Your help will allow us to continue to provide these vital services to our seniors.

Please be as generous as you can and mail your check to:

A Matter of Balance Managing Concerns about Falls (8-Week Session) - Starting Tuesday, February 21 from 9:30-11:30AM. A Matter of Balance is a new 8 week nationally recognized fall prevention program designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults who manifest this concern. The program was developed and formally evaluated by The Roybal Center for Enhancement of Late-Life Function at Boston University with a grant from the National Institute on Aging and is being implemented in 36 states. It is being offered to us by Fairfield University.

A Matter of Balance received the Archstone Foundation Award for Excellence in Program Innovation. Studies indicate that up to half of community dwelling older adults experience fear of falling and that many respond to this concern by curtailing activity. Being inactive often results in loss of muscle strength and balance. It can also compromise social interaction and increase the risk of isolation, depression and anxiety. Fear of falling can actually contribute to falling. The participants will learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance.

A Matter of Balance acknowledges the risk of falling but emphasizes practical coping strategies to reduce this concern. Trained facilitators conduct eight two-hour sessions designed for groups of 10-12 participants. During the class, participants learn to view falls and fear as controllable and set realistic goals for increased activity. Classes are FREE and Registration is required. Space is limited to 12 people. Please call (203) 847-3115.
