Meals
On Wheels
Who
Is Eligible?
The service is available to all Norwalk residents of any age who are not meeting
their nutritional needs because of difficulty shopping or preparing their own
meals due to long term illness, injury, disability or general frailty.
Two meals a day - one hot, one cold - are prepared and delivered by volunteers. Meals On Wheels currently delivers meals to about 100 Norwalk residents each day.
What Is The
Cost?
The cost is based on monthly income to which a sliding scale fee is applied.
In some cases, third party payments are available. Monthly invoices are mailed
to recipients or to family members if requested.
How Do I Sign
Up?
Anyone can request Meals On Wheels by calling the Norwalk Senior Center at (203)
847-3115 between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. A home visit is made by
the Meals on Wheels Coordinator, and meal delivery can be made in a few days.
Meal Information
Meals can be delivered to the recipient's home up to five days per week, (Monday
through Friday) between 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., by a volunteer who takes
a moment for a friendly visit. Meal plans which provide enough food for 1-7
days per week are chosen by the customer. All meals are delivered cold in thermal
transport containers. A registered dietician plans the menus and meals are prepared
fresh each day by a professional staff in an institutional kitchen. Some special
diets, such as diabetic and renal diets, are available.
How Can I Help?
This program is heavily subsidized in order to maintain affordable costs to
our customers. Meals on Wheels is supported by the City of Norwalk and private
contributions.
Contributions
are fully tax-deductible and are greatly appreciated and needed.
Volunteering is also a much needed and rewarding service.
Volunteers who deliver meals usually stop for a quick, friendly visit and safety
check with their customers.
For additional
information or to volunteer, please contact Meals on Wheels Coordinator Mark
Palmer at the Norwalk Senior Center at (203)-847-3115.
